Regional Identity – Doc Martin

In the clip of Doc Martin that we watched there was a lot of aspects where regional identity is shown. There are a lot of stereotypes and other negative things associated with different regions and areas around the world, the scenery in the clip that we watched was very countryside orientated and most of the characters within the scene were more countryside themed too. That expect for Doc Martin himself where he is a town man.

Mise-en scene  

All the characters within the scene had a county accent and where all wearing more relaxed clothes that you would see more towards the countryside. This compared to Doc Martin where he Is wearing a suit and this refers to the fact that he is from the city and he has only just arrived in the setting that they are in. There is another aspect of Regional Identity when the market lady starts to talk to Doc Martin she has a scruffy jacket on that is usually seen worn by farmers and she speaks in a southern accent, Doc Martin is from the cities so he has more of a midlands accent. At the very start of the clip both plumbers are wearing very old plumber clothes and this shows regional identity because the southern villages aren’t as wealthy as the cities and therefore they must spend more money on the more important things.

Camera

There’s a small variety of camera shots throughout the clip that we watched. One of the main shots however was him walking down the street and the camera was still focused on the same point throughout that shot. This represents regional identity because he is new to the village because he doesn’t know where he is going and he only just got there. The focus of the camera is always set on the person that is speaking at that current time and this shows you who is important in the scene.

Sound

Throughout the clip that we watched there was a lot of sounds that represent Regional Identity. One of the main sounds that show this is at the very start when one of the plumbers is talking. He constantly mumbles his words and doesn’t know what he’s saying and this means that he is uneducated and then this show regional identity because it’s a stereotype that people that live in the countryside aren’t as smart as people in the city. There’s music throughout the clip that we watched and it’s very relaxed and calming music and this represents regional identity because the countryside is very calm compared to the city where it’s hectic and noisy.

Editing

There’s not much editing throughout the clip that we watched but whenever it was edited there was music that went from the scene before to the current scene and one of the more noticeable times that this happens is when he just finds the dog to where he is taking it to the Police station. The music starts off intense in the first scene because it makes the audience tense of what he is going to do with the dog. Then when it cuts to the next part the music gets up-beat and happy because it’s just him walking down the street with the dog. This shows regional identity because the countryside is more of a community and it’s easy to just give the dog back to the police station.

Representation and ethnicity in Hotel Babylon

There was a clip of Hotel Babylon that we watched and in it the immigration officers came to the hotel for all the illegal immigrants that worked at the hotel. The main officer that came into the hotel is considered the protagonist because he is the evil person in the scene where he tries to take away all the immigrants which have done nothing wrong. All of the immigrants are treated like animals, trapped in a room where people are hunting them and want to take them away and this is a degrading aspect because they are just hunted and not treated like human beings just because their ethnicity. 

Camera

The camera work throughout the clip was fairly casual, there was an over the shoulder shot when the antagonist shows up giving a view of the hotel and the manager woman right at the start and this shows both of the people in the shot have the power and authority over the hotel. It looks like it’s a hand held camera which gives the scene a lot more realism because it’s very fast pace as you can move around quicker with a hand held camera. The camera work shows ethnicity because when the hotel worker gets found there is a focus pull which shows that he is in danger because it focuses on him struggling to get away and all of this is just because he's black. 

Editing

The editing throughout the clip had a lot of jump cuts throughout it and this is where it went from the immigrants to the officer and this shows it’s intense because it’s fast pace and you don’t know what’s going to happen next. However, this use of fast pace editing made the scene flow less because you didn’t quite know what’s happening at all times. There’s constant music playing in the background of all the scenes and this shows that it’s all related and makes it flow a lot more then you think.The editing shows ethnicity because it creates tension with the jump cuts from the officer to the workers that they want to hide and not get caught and arrested which brings back the theme of they are treated like animals because they have to hide away from their captures.  

Sound

There was a lot of background music which sounded very intense which fit because of the scenes that were happening in the clip where the immigrants had to hide away so they wouldn’t be found and arrested. There is constant conversation going throughout the clip whether it’s with the officer and the manager or the person who’s hiding the immigrants with the immigrants themselves. There’s also a lot of shouting because they want to get organised and not get caught by the officer. The intense music represents ethnicity because it shows that one of the illegal workers isn't concentrating and he gets caught so he's been hunted which is a type of racism. 

Mise-an scene

All of the costumes that were used in this scene were very co-ordinated, all of the immigrants that worked at the hotel were all wearing their uniform which made it a lot more professional. However, the whole scene is very messy because its rushed around the kitchen which also makes the scene a lot more intense as they have to be fast to escape the officers. Towards the start of the clip there is a black male worker at the hotel and he is well dressed in a full suit and this compares to the rest of the immigrant workers where they are wearing really scruffy outfits and this represents ethnicity because they are illegally working so they will pay less for them and therefore it doesn't matter what they look like because people shouldn't be seeing them.

The Male Gaze

Fifth Harmony – All in my head (Flex) ft. Fetty Wap

In this music video there are a lot of women (All of Fifth Harmony) that are barely clothed, mainly bikinis dancing around on the beach. However, you could say that this is degrading to the woman even though they are singing because of the amount of men in the video. There’s definitely an aspect of the male gaze because the women are the main part of the video, there is also topless men in this video so both genders could be attracted to the music video but because of the fact that both the men and the women are exposed it’s not as degrading and it’s more equal.

Right at the start of the music video each of the Fifth Harmony are on their own one by one and practically presented to the camera and at this point the male gaze is fairly obvious as they are all sexualised even though they are clothed. 

Representation

We started watching a TV Drama in class called Our Girl. The main character in this is a female called Georgie Lane and she is represented in a certain way, she is a solder in the armed forces but she is taken by Muslim terrorists and is forced to be a medic for the terrorist’s injured soldiers. When she is captured she is put into a cell with another woman called Kiki, she had given up but Georgie is a mentally and physically strong woman so she didn’t give up, told Kiki to have faith in her and to not give up, that takes a lot of power and will.

Georgie is stereotyped as a woman and she is done up with makeup and her hair looks good even though she is in the middle of a war zone and she has near to nothing unclean about her apart from the makeup that has been purposely put on to make her look like she hasn’t showered. The area around her in comparison to her is extremely dirty and you would have thought that she’d look worse in the conditions that she’s in but she doesn’t. This is done to make her stand out in front of the background and be more appealing for the viewers to watch. Later in the episode that we watched kiki, the woman that I mentioned before, looked very rough compared to Georgie and this is done because they want to emphasise how she looks and stereotype her as a woman a lot more.

Camera Work

There were a lot of different shots throughout the clip that we watched which was at the end of s2 e1. Most of the time the shots were very close up, they did this to make the scene more intense and look like there’s more action then there really is. There were also a few low angle shots for the terrorists to make them look like they are completely overpowering the soldiers in the ambulance. When the main antagonist leaves the car there is a tracking shot on him to show that he is the main antagonist and that he is the person you need to watch out for, it also gives the scene a lot more action because you know that he is a powerful man. Finally, there was an establishing shot of the ambulance at the very start of the clip and they did this to show the ambulance was alone away from the convoy and that’s when they got jumped by the terrorists.

Sound

Throughout the scene there was a  lot of different sounds, one of the main sounds was sound bridging, this is where when the scene changes the audio stays from the scene before. Also, the sounds of gunfire shows that the scene is very action pact and the shooters have a lot more control than everyone else.  There's music throughout the scene and most of it is really intense because of the content of the clip when the terrorists and the ambulance meet. Also there's a fair amount of dialogue throughout the scene and this makes it even more intense because the main antagonist shouts at the people in the ambulance and the same with Georgie Lane and one of the soldiers' last conversations which is upsetting because he's a nice character of what you know of him. 

Editing

Throughout the clip that there's a few different types of editing, the main type of editing was fast pace editing and this means there's lots of very small cuts to different angles and positions to make the scene much more intense. Also at some point through the scene there was a slow fade which came with some music that followed onto the next scene and this shows that the two scenes are linked in some way.

Mise-en-Scene

The whole of the scene was very dusty and looked run down and even abandoned and this compared to the main character of Georgie where she looks very made up is really obvious. Also, the clothing that everyone's wearing is dirty but that's expected because it's a military outfit. All of the terrorists wear very dark clothing that covers their bodies. All of the lighting that is on this scene is natural, bright sunlight to make the scene look more natural and less fake to the audience.

One of the biggest reasons why i did this quiz is because i'm a gamer but i wouldn't fit myself into the "Hardcore Gamer" tribe because the bio on it is nothing near and then i took the quiz and it showed that i really wasn't in the Hardcore Gamer tribe and i was in the Townie tribe.

Writer: the writer of a film is the person that writes the scripts and everything to do with the bare bones of films so like the story of the film and what all the actors are going to say.

Producer: Producers plan and coordinate various aspects of the film production, such as selecting script, coordinating writing, directing and editing, and arranging financing. One example of a producer is George Lucas for the Star Wars movies. 

Casting director: The casting director is the person that is responsible for assigning roles in the films

Director: A person who supervises the actors and other staff in a film, play or similar production. 

Film finance: Film finance is an aspect of film production that occurs during the development stage prior to pre-production, and is concerned with determining the potential value of a proposed film.

Camera operator: A camera operator is someone who records images that entertain or inform an audience. Camera operators capture a wide range of material for TV shows, motion pictures, music videos, documentaries and news and sporting events. Most work in the motion picture industry or television broadcasting.  

Editor: a person who is in charge of and determines the final content of a newspaper, magazine, or multi-author book.

Production designer: In a film and television, a production designer or P.D. is the person responsible for the physical overall look of a filmed event such as a TV program, video game, music video, or 

advertisement. Production designers have a key creative role in the creation of motion pictures and televisions.

Marketing: The action or business of promoting and selling products or services, including market research and advertising 

Exhibition: a public display of works of art of items of interest, held in an art gallery or museum or at a trade fair.
